Thought of the Day

Your job is not to Sell, it is to get the customer to Buy!

Jim Yorgason

Hi, I'm Jim Yorgason. My broadcast career started in the mid 1960's at a really small AM station in Brigham City Utah. You need to know I had to ride the bus to the station as I did not have my driver's license at that time. I started REALLY young! I made my way to the top Rock station in Salt Lake City within a few years. Radio during the 1960's at a Drake - Chenault programmed station was a golden time! I soon however found my calling was to be in the television world and by the early 1970's I was "pushing camera", producing programs and later found myself on the sales team at the local CBS TV affiliate. With some hard work and a little luck I achieved several of my career goals. I recently concluded 30 years at KSL-TV 5, the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City Utah as Vice President and General Manager.

A few career highlights...

  • Vice President & General Manager, KSL-TV (NBC)
  • Vice President & General Manager, KCSG-TV (IND) Cedar City, Utah
  • Vice President & General Manager, Video West Productions
  • Vice President & General Manager of Host Affiliate (KSL-TV) for 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics
  • Experience in: broadcast operational budgets, inventory management, network affiliation relations and contract negotiations, talent employment contracts, sales management/new business development, syndication program contracts and negotiations, broadcast research and ratings, marketing/promotions, film/video budgeting and production, digital broadcast transition, CD-DVD audio and video duplication and national sales/rep firm negotiations.

Brigham City / Ogden / Salt Lake City, Utah. I was an on-air talent at several radio stations. I was good but not great. I saw opportunity in television (KSL-TV). I always enjoyed the technical / production side of TV. I spent a lot of time doing camera/lighting work. These were the days of 2 inch video tape and 16mm film.

Audio, master control and technical direction days followed. I spent a few years as Technical Operations Manager, then one day took a left-turn in my career. I was asked to become an account executive in local sales. I spent 10 of the greatest, most productive years of my life in TV sales! You learn a lot when you are on commission and I will always have a "warm spot" in my heart for sales!

Video West Production. Salt Lake City, Utah. My success in TV sales brought an opportunity to become Vice President / Sales Manager at Bonneville International Corporation's film and video production company. Within a year I was VP/GM. I spent 5 great years negotiating film, audio and video production on a national and international basis. Network cable programs, Ad Agency productions, studio and location shoots, satellite feeds, mass duplication of audio, video and CD/DVD products. Once again a great learning experience, but broadcast TV was calling me back.

KSL Television. Salt Lake City, Utah. The year 2000 brought another career change for me, Vice President and General Manager of the NBC station that was about to host the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Not many will ever experience the challenges of being the GM of an NBC affiliate with the Olympics in their market. What an unbelievable time! There was no Olympic manual book, you learn as you go and try to control costs! During this time, I also renegotiated the NBC affiliate agreement, several talent contracts and countless syndication program agreements and handled a few legal issues. Managing a large and number one rated news operation, overhauling the complete sales effort, restructuring the promotion department and communicating with top notch technical/engineering staff is MORE than a full time job! Add the challenges of the digital world/IT/ and License renewal and I think I may be able to help you make a difference somewhere in your operation.

I'd love to chat with you about your challenges and opportunities!
